Uni ready to ‘get square’ against Army
A quest for redemption will headline one of this year’s most hotly contested sporting tournaments as ̨ϲ takes on the might of Townsville’s 3rd Brigade.
The annual “Battle of the Icons” Uni vs Army Games promises plenty of action as teams clash in rugby, basketball, netball, mixed touch football, mixed netball, and soccer.
̨ϲ Student Association Sport and Recreation Manager Jason Conn said the atmosphere, athleticism and rivalry were not to be missed at the Games.
“Uni vs Army is one of ̨ϲ’s most anticipated events of the year. Both sides bring an unmatched passion for the jersey and a healthy rivalry,” he said.
“The Games are a great way to highlight some of Townsville’s talented up-and-coming athletes, while promoting active lifestyles and community participation through sport.”
Army completed a near clean sweep of last year’s games, taking out men’s basketball, women’s netball, mixed netball, women’s soccer, mixed touch, women’s rugby 7s, and men’s rugby, while ̨ϲ had its sole win in men’s soccer.
But Mr Conn said those lopsided results were all the motivation Uni needed to get some payback at the Games on Friday.
“I’m sure Uni will be firing on all cylinders. They’ll leave nothing in the tank,” he said.
̨ϲ Chancellor Professor Ngiare Brown said the Games promised plenty of on-field action between the University and the Army.
“It is exciting to see these two pillars of the Townsville community come together for a day of hard-fought competition,” she said.
“We are both enormously proud of our longstanding service to the community and of the legacy we have built over the decades in Townsville and beyond.
“I wish all teams the very best of luck. Go Uni.”
Commander of the Army’s 3rd Brigade Brigadier David McCammon said the Games were an “excellent opportunity” for both sides to enjoy some friendly competition.
“This is a great opportunity to come together and engage in a competitive environment,” he said.
“Most importantly, it is great for the Townsville community and the Army to be a part of this in a garrison city.”
Brig McCammon said Army was “keen to continue its dominance” at the Games but his wife, who works at ̨ϲ, was hoping the winning streak would come to an end this year.
“Annaliese is pretty confident, but my view is we have the runs on the board and are ready,” he said.
“I am sure ̨ϲ will bring their A game.”
